French in Chicago
Why learn French in Chicago? – Chicago is the home of deep-dish pizza, the Cubs, and a giant, stainless steel bean that is actually a cloud. It is the 3rd largest city in the U.S., with an estimated population of 12 million in 2018. On the surface, Chicago might not strike you as a hub of French culture, but did you know the city’s story started with the arrival of French explorers in the 17th century? They named the area after “Checagou,” a translation of the Native American word for garlic, shikaakwa. And that’s not all — Chicago’s first permanent resident was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable. The inhabitant, from what is now Haiti, arrived in 1779 and celebrated the first Chicago wedding when he married his Native American wife.
While Chicago honors its French language heritage, what it treasures most is its cuisine. The Chicago French Market is the only year-round, indoor market in the city. There are more than 30 specialty vendors to choose from to get your fresh, organic ingredients. The Windy City is also filled with French restaurants which you can sample during the annual Passport to France event hosted by the French-American Chamber of Commerce in Chicago, and which in 2017 had over 1,000 Francophiles gather for tempting cuisine and live entertainment. Bastille Day is also taken very seriously, with the Alliance Française of Chicago overseeing the organization. As you can see, French classes in Chicago will never be boring. There are so many extracurricular activities to engage in.
Now, French courses in Chicago will open doors to more than just fun and games for you in the Second City. Many of Europe’s largest companies like Veolia, Dassault Systemes, Lafarge, and French companies like Orange, JCDecaux, and AXA have their U.S. headquarters located in Chicago. This is due to the fact that Illinois’s financial market ranks as #1 in the US, with its very own McCormick Place ranking as the #1 American convention center, seeing over 3 million visitors per year!
According to a 2018 study by Statistical Atlas, French-speaking households are mostly found in the neighborhoods of South Chicago, Lincoln Park, Hyde Park, and the South Shore.
