During a time when musical bands flourished and dominated the Cantopop (Cantonese pop) market in Hong Kong, Beyond was one of the biggest names in the business, touching upon a host of genres, from alternative rock to art rock, pop rock, and, of course, Cantopop. Their biggest hit, “真的愛你” (Honestly Love You), speaks about maternal love. It pushed the band’s career to the peak and is frequently played during Mother’s Day in restaurants and similar venues, in order to laud maternal sacrifice.

"This song pushed the band’s career to the peak and is frequently played during Mother’s Day in restaurants and similar venues."

The song is written from the perspective of the band members, as there are hints in the lyrics of their mothers disagreeing with their career choices. Many people can relate to the song, however, since the theme of maternal care, which is unrequited and all-encompassing, is universal and resonates with audiences. Songs praising maternal affection are rare, and one that manages to withstand the test of time is even rarer. The songwriter offers a portrait of his mother by depicting her hands and visage, with an emphasis on her hands. One line, “無法可修飾的一對手 帶出溫暖永遠在背後,” describes them as unpolished and rough, but with a warmth that does not wither with age. Another line contains the symbol of “hands,” intentionally placed at the end to reinforce the theme of maternal love. “仍記起溫馨的一對手 始終給我照顧未變樣” speaks of the songwriter’s remembrance of his mother’s loving hands, which have never ceased caring for him. A mother’s hands, no matter how wrinkled and unappealing they have become with time, will always be the best cradle for children.

The lyrics also evoke the eternity of maternal affection: “永未退讓” (unyielding), “一生” (a lifetime), and “未變樣” (unchanged). A mother may be annoying and controlling at times, but she will always welcome her son or daughter home with open arms, no matter what they’ve done to disgrace themselves or their family. Next time, if you are having trouble deciding which song to play on Mother’s Day, try this one out. It will move your mother just the way you want.
