Korean is a challenging language to learn but with books like My Korean I, the daunting task of learning the complex language becomes easy and enjoyable. This book follows a simple flow and the information in each unit is not too overwhelming. My Korean I is perfect for students who want to learn Korean with a motivating and simple textbook that helps them each step of the way.

Overview

My Korean I is a somewhat lengthy book that comes with 500 pages and spans over 10 units. The book has a lot of colorful comics, role playing games, and plenty of examples in English and Korean. The book covers the basics of the language such as greetings, asking questions, and describing people and things. As the student continues working with the book they will move past the basics and learn how to read and write in Korean. Near the last few chapters, students will work closely with the Korean alphabet, Hangul, and learn to construct long sentences. My Korean I has an easy to follow structure that includes dialogues, grammar points and some listening, writing and reading activities. In each unit the book provides sufficient practice to help students improve all four language skills.

In each unit, students will also work on dialogues that go over common situations related to daily Korean life. Everything from going to the supermarket, dining out, and socializing is covered in these exercises. Along with each dialogue students will come across plenty of visual examples such as illustrations, amusing comics, and photographs. Since everything in the book is translated into English it even helps absolute beginner students understand the information presented in the book. There are also verb charts at the end of the book (in both Korean and English) which are a huge help when working on certain writing or fill-in-the-blank exercises in the book.

"In each unit, students will also work on dialogues that go over common situations related to daily Korean life. Everything from going to the supermarket, dining out, and socializing is covered in these exercises."

Pros

· The information in each unit relates to what will be worked on in the next lesson. This forces students to completely grasp the information before advancing to the next unit.

· Very nicely drawn illustrations capture the students’ attention and add a nice visual touch.

· Everything is written in Korean and English.

Cons

· Even though the book is designed for beginners, it is recommended that students have at least some knowledge of Hangul.

Recommended For

· University students who are enrolling in a Korean course.

· Elementary level Korean language students.

· Students who want to work on all four language skills (writing, reading, listening, speaking) as well as gain some grammar and vocabulary insight.

· Classrooms of at least 6 people to get the most use of the dialogues and role-plays.

Overall, My Korean I is a fantastic option whether you’re studying alone or in a classroom setting. The book is easy to work with and very visually appealing as well. The explanations are clear, the tables and charts are comprehensible and a whole lot of language is covered throughout the book. My Korean I is an excellent choice for learning Korean with or without the help of a teacher.
