Have you used this book?

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is divided into five levels with N5 for beginners and N1 for upper advanced students. Each test focuses an equal amount of attention on all four skills; arguably one of the toughest aspects of the exam is the ability to read and understand a number of texts of varying size within a short period of time.

The Kanzen Master series is designed to help learners improve their abilities; as such this particular textbook is aimed at reading skills. It can be studied either with a teacher or independently; however it is best suited to students willing to study the material alone. The book is written entirely in Japanese including all the instructions, questions and answers; for this reason it is only suitable for people who have reached a certain level in their reading skills. The content page and introduction explain how the exam texts are divided into different kinds of articles. For example, articles that contrast two topics, use metaphors, and present an opinion. A second type of article typically links narratives with extensive comprehension questions. A third set of articles presents another type of text which can either be an advertisement, work email or notice.

"Each test focuses an equal amount of attention on all four skills; arguably one of the toughest aspects of the exam is the ability to read and understand a number of texts of varying size within a short period of time."

Each section of the book begins with an explanation of a specific text that can be found in the exam, and then an example with a multiple choice question is given. The following page provides a breakdown of the example text, key words, and hints. This breakdown explains why three of the options are incorrect and then the answer is provided. There can be several example texts like this after which real articles are presented with questions and answers. It is very important to learn to be able to read at a steady pace and understand what you are reading. As you work on each chapter you will also become used to the kinds of questions that are asked on the test. At the end of the textbook there is an answer booklet with explanations of each answer in the book and why they are correct or incorrect.

One of the best ways to go through this book is to read through a few texts, answer the questions and then check your answers. After doing this, make sure to review the text and circle any grammar points that you are unclear about and underline any vocabulary or Kanji that you aren’t familiar with. It is a painstakingly slow process, however you will gain the necessary skills to be able to read a whole text and comprehend it. This kind of constant practice will help develop your reading skill and ensure that you don’t forget what you have learnt.

If you have completed two thirds of the book and followed the method above you will be well prepared for the final section of the book. In the last few pages there is a comprehension test which will help you track your progress and see where you need to improve. Once finished with this final section, students will have a clear idea of how the reading section of the test is structured and they will know how prepared they are for the JLPT.

Although this is a very lengthy course book which follows a specific rhythm, the book is perfect for preparing yourself for The Japanese Language Proficiency Test. I would highly recommend this book to any serious student who is preparing for the JLPT.
