Have you used this book?

Would you like to get started on learning Dutch and go from the beginner to intermediate level in just one year? If this is a goal you would like to reach, Routledge Intensive Dutch Course is the book for you. This book can be used for university courses, small group lessons, or even self-study courses.

"This intensive Dutch course is perfect for beginners who truly want to be able to speak Dutch in a short amount of time."

The book consists of eleven different chapters (or so-called units); the first eight units focus on different topics such as describing people, activities, money, shopping, the weather, etc., the last three units focus more on cultural information about the Netherlands and Belgium. Every unit begins with a summary of the content that will be seen and taught, and then a number of sections are provided for the student to work with. Students will come across a listening section where they will read a text which is related to an audio clip that the student will follow along with, a structure section which provides students with grammar explanations and exercises, a communication section that focuses on pronunciation and speaking skills and finally a cultural section. Throughout each unit students can expect to come across a variety of new vocabulary and grammar activities. The answer key to the exercises isn’t found at the back of the book but it can be found online, along with some extra teaching material.

At the end of the book students will also find a list of irregular verbs, pronunciation guides and spelling tips. This book is perfect for group classes, but if a student decides to use this book for a self-study course, they will come across a number of obstacles. The book has a number of partner activities, speaking exercises and occasional sections that call for the assistance of a teacher or tutor. The book also uses some vocabulary which is not explained clearly (or not explained at all) and a dictionary will more than likely be necessary for students to have on hand.

As this is, as the name says it, an intensive Dutch course, it isn’t really worth buying it if you are planning to go on a two week holiday to Belgium or The Netherlands. If your goals are a bit more “short-term” then this course might not be what you’re looking for. If you are, for example, planning to live in a Dutch speaking country for an extended period of time, then Routledge Intensive Dutch Course will give you enough information to prepare you for your stay and help you communicate with the locals. This intensive Dutch course is perfect for beginners who truly want to be able to speak Dutch in a short amount of time. Routledge Intensive Dutch Course helps students who are enrolled in a group or private classes put their four language skills to use and acquire useful knowledge about the Dutch language.
