Have you used this book?

Does the idea of learning Dutch at home in only 12 weeks sound appealing to you? If 12 weeks seems like a very short amount of time, believe It or not it is possible to achieve with Hugo Dutch in Three Months. With only eight hours of study time a week for a period of twelve weeks, you can learn the basics of Dutch in only three months.

"Hugo Dutch in Three Months is perfect for any beginner student who wants to learn the basics of Dutch in a short amount of time."

Hugo Dutch in Three Months consists of twelve chapters. The first chapter focuses on proper pronunciation and while working on this chapter, students will go over a number of pronunciation exercises which explain how certain vowels, consonants, and letter combination are said. Along with the pronunciation activities students will also go over some audio exercises which will allow them to listen and repeat common phrases spoken by native Dutch speakers. This section of the first chapter is also perfect for developing proper listening comprehension skills before moving on to the more complex structures of the language. After the first chapter, the following lessons are presented in an easy to follow structure so that students can get into a proper rhythm. Every chapter begins with a summary of the lesson, some grammar structures are introduced and explained, and then the student is provided with a list of vocabulary related to the chapter. Students will also be given instructions for each activity in English with a Dutch translation below it. Near the end of each chapter students will also come across translation exercises, grammar review, speaking drills, and listening activities which focus on colloquial Dutch dialogues. Every couple of chapters the student is also presented with review activities in order to help them go over some difficult language structures that may have been seen in the previous lessons.

At the end of the book students will find some reading activities, but in order to challenge the student a bit more, the articles do not come with any English translations, just a list of vocabulary words from the previous lessons. I believe that this is a great way to provoke students to try and understand the context of the article and it is a great way to learn the language. At the end of the book students will also find an answer key to the exercises, a mini dictionary and a grammar index. The lessons in this book are short, the explanations are easy to understand, and a variety of exercises are presented in each lesson.

I believe that Hugo Dutch in Three Months is perfect for any beginner student who wants to learn the basics of Dutch in a short amount of time. The book is even perfect for students who aren’t necessarily beginners, but want to refresh their knowledge of Dutch. This course helps students develop a proper foundation in the language and it helps them use all four language skills in each lesson; on top of this, the book can be purchased at a very low price! I would highly recommend this book to independent learners and students enrolled in a group class.
