Why Study Portuguese in Chicago

Learn Portuguese for Work: Learning Portuguese in Chicago can really help you to find new employment opportunities in the city. Did you know that 400 major corporations that include 36 Fortune 500 firms have their main headquarters in Chicago? Aside from the multitude of multinational companies that operate in the city’s financial district, Chicago is also home to a vast choice of Brazilian companies where Portuguese speaking is a desirable skillset. Taking Portuguese lessons could help you to find employment across several Brazil-based companies that operate in Chicago such as St. Mary’s and Prarie Materials (Votorantrim), WEG, Valid SA and Oxiteno. The Brazilian investment company 3G Capital also has offices in Chicago and was one of the major investors when Kraft merged with Heinz in March 2015.

Learn Portuguese for Culture: Learning Portuguese can really help you to explore the Brazilian and Portuguese events and festivals that make Chicago a colorful city of culture. The annual Chicago Latino Film Festival takes place every year in March and April. 2019 was the 35th year of the event. The festival is a great place to get familiar with the Portuguese language as some of the Brazilian language movies at the event also have English subtitles. Learning traditional Brazilian dance such as Samba will also give you a fascinating insight into the culture of the Portuguese-speaking inhabitants of the city. Chicago Samba is a musical ensemble where you can learn to dance and also learn some Portuguese on the frontline. Nothing gets you closer to culture than sampling its cuisine. Visiting one of Chicago’s finest Portuguese or Brazilian eateries will not only give you a taste of the culture but will give you the chance to listen to authentic Portuguese speakers. You can even speak to the waiter to practice your language skills. The most highly recommended Portuguese restaurant in Chicago is Petisco on Diversey Ave. Some of the most popular Brazilian restaurants in Chicago are Sinhá on Adams Street and Fogo de Chão Brazilian Steakhouse at Rosemont.

Learn Portuguese for Social: When you want to meet like-minded people in Chicago who already speak the language or are in the early stages of learning, the Chicago Brazilian Portuguese Group has over 600 members, and can really help you to improve your Portuguese. The group meets several times every week to discover Portuguese speaking movies, music, and culture. The Chicago Language Café is another group that is for people who already know some Portuguese or want to practice what they already know. The group meets on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
